BC Hockey has a lot to keep score of, and the 130 minor hockey associations, 60,000 players, 4,500 referees, 10,000 coaches and 20,000 official volunteers are just the tip of the stick. To help them manage amateur hockey throughout BC and the Yukon, Dotfusion reimagined the BC Hockey website, removing a lagging legacy system that required developer support and replacing it with a sleek, modern, easy-to-use site that integrates all aspects of the organization.

The BC Hockey team is united in their passion for hockey. Dotfusion gave them the digital tools to share that passion and grow the BC Hockey community.

BC Hockey is a non-profit organization and a member of Hockey Canada, with a mission to provide stewardship of amateur hockey at all levels throughout British Columbia and the Yukon. Dotfusion worked closely with BC Hockey to redesign a site that integrated all core elements of the organization, including admin, finance, bookings, tournaments and data, and to merge the BC Hockey League and BC HL League sites into a seamless and intuitive user experience.

Technology

We migrated the site to Agility CMS, which provided the needed flexibility to design a back-end experience that made it easy for the BC Hockey team to do their jobs without compromising the look and feel of the site. While the BC Hockey team needed to call a designer to make changes to the old site, with the new site they can control the CMS and make changes themselves.

Strategy

A key element of the redesign was to keep it simple and intuitive so that the BC Hockey team could manage the website without designer support. Another core challenge was to funnel all of the content of the site, from rules and regulations to player information and PDF forms, into a streamlined design with a seamless look and feel that made the information easily accessible. We had a dedicated employee on-call for client questions to keep communication open and the process running smoothly.

Design

We used colour to differentiate different design aspects for easy choice and flexibility. We also chose places to add restrictions so that users were not overwhelmed with choices, making it simple for the BC Hockey team to update content. And we did it all without compromising the look and feel of the site.
